Robrecht Vandemeulebroecke studied philosophy at the University of Antwerp and the Brussels Free University (VUB), after which he worked as a translator of German, English and French texts on cultural, historical and philosophical subjects. Since October 2005 he is afiliated to the VUB department of philosophy as a PhD-student on a grant from the FWO-Vlaanderen. He is currently researching the constitutive role of "retorical strategies" in philosophical texts, and the degree to which every critical discourse needs those – essentially uncritical – mechanisms to be able to be articulated. A model of the antagonistic relation between both elements will also be relevant to the problems of social and individual identity construction, and of the self-critical aknowledgement or retorical exclusion of the Other. Key authors in this project are Plato and Nietzsche.
