Robert A. Stebbins is Faculty Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary. He received his Ph.D. in 1964 from the University of Minnesota. He has written over 200 articles and chapters and written or edited 35 books, including most recently, Between Work and Leisure (2004), Challenging Mountain Nature: Risk, Motive, and Lifestyle in Three Hobbyist Sports (2005); and Serious Leisure: A Perspective for Our Time (2007). A Dictionary of Nonprofit Terms and Concepts (with David Horton Smith and Michael Dover) and Personal Decisions in the Public Square: Beyond Problem Solving into a Positive Sociology were published in 2006 and 2009. Stebbins was elected Fellow of the Academy of Leisure Sciences in 1996 and, in 1999, elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His interests in leisure studies date to late 1973 with research on amateurs in theatre, archaeology, and baseball.
