Have been deeply involved with the Caribbean republic of Haiti since 1992, and have since branched out to carve a career as a Caribbean expert. I used to be a gardener, then took a degree in Latin American Studies. I first went to the Caribbean in 1993 when I got myself onto the UN civilian mission to Haiti. Saw a lot of dead people murdered because they were regarded as a threat to the entrenched elite. Got very cycnical about the UN. Went back to the UK and became the coordinator of the Haiti Support Group - a solidarity organisation funded by Christian Aid, Oxfam, and hundreds of individual supporters. More recently have worked as a freelance journalist reporting on Haiti and other Caribbean countries, with a special interest in civil society, workers' rights, and the media.
